Israel freaks PDF Print E-mail

You might know them, people that are passionate about Israel. It seems they can't talk about anything else anymore. In and out of season, they try to convince the rest of the congregation that we, "gentile believers", are connected to the Jewish people. They want to exchange the Sunday for the Sabbath and celebrate Jewish feasts. They explain that Jewish feasts are actually Biblical feasts. They are often called freaks.

In the Bible, one often speaks about Israel with exaggerated enthusiasm. This is very striking. Take Zechariah 1:14:

Thus says the LORD of hosts: I am zealous for Jerusalem. And for Zion with great zeal.

And in Zechariah 8:14 this is repeated:

Thus says the LORD of hosts: 'I am zealous for Zion with great zeal; With great fervor I am zealous for her.'

And what about Jeremiah 31:2:

(Israel) found grace in the wilderness— Israel, when I went to give him rest. Verse 3: Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with loving kindness I have drawn you.

Who is saying these words? Yes, God Himself is saying these words. And in verse 7 we are called to rejoice about Israel:

For thus says the LORD: "Sing with gladness for Jacob, And shout among the chief of the nations; Proclaim, give praise, and say, 'O LORD, save Your people, The remnant of Israel!'

Try to read this silently. It just won't work. You can't ignore it: the books of the prophets are full of exuberant texts about Israel's restoration.

To be honest, many Israel freaks didn't always act smart. They often isolated themselves. This is a pity. Consequently, in many congregations Israel was put aside. As a result, we neglected Israel. Vicars, pastors and other leaders, don't hide behind unreal arguments! Those days lie behind you. Israel must be put on the map again. Not merely one day a year. No, as it ought to be: in the midst of the congregation. After all, we are grafted in the Jewish people (Romans 11). We can't ignore Israel any longer. Sure, Israel has caused God's wrath, but it's coming to an end. The time of God having mercy on Israel has begun. This is the hour (Psalms 102:14) Mercy triumphs over judgement… (James 2:13).

Again, Zechariah 1, but now verse 14:

I am exceedingly angry with the nations at ease; For I was a little angry, And they helped—but with evil intent.

Read the prophets. Discover God's concern with Israel (there is a list with appropriate texts on our site). These current days are severe. Not just for Jerusalem, but for the church as well. Israel will be completely isolated. Who will go up into the gap? (Ezekiel 13:5 and 22:30). We, the "gentile believers", are the only ones that cannot remain silent as watchmen on the walls. (Isaiah 62). Israel doesn't have any other friends. We, gentile believers, are called to comfort Israel and take out the stones. It is not the Israel freaks that don't walk in step no, in many cases the vicars, preachers and other leaders will have to wake up. Read and study about the restoration of Israel. You can't hide behind your own ignorance. The Bible is full of stories about His people. In all these stories, you can notice our Father's unlimited compassion. God is looking for leaders that cherish the same compassion for His people. We cannot continue saying that Israel causes a lot of fuss in our congregation.

What a misconception!

See you on the walls of Jerusalem.
